Did you ever hire someone and just get a bad feeling about it?

Wow. Being in a small town, we’ve hired a few employees that were family friends because we knew we could trust them. Big mistake. I’ll never hire anyone again that would make it awkward to fire them. Most have worked out fine, but a couple have done very poorly and it has been an awkward...

Anyone going to NAPICS this year or been before?

My fiance and I are attending for the first time and just wondering if anyone has any advice on a gameplan to make sure we hit everything. Biggest points of interest would probably be POS systems, marketing and anything to help with a future expansion of our kitchen and dining room. I’ve read...

    pizza cheese

GotRocks. Thanks, I actually never considered that. I’ll check with the health inspector before I do anything. I just thought it would be a good idea for a collaboration between the only 2 local places. That’s about as far as the idea has gone. No idea if they would even be interested or if it’s...

    pizza cheese

That would explain it. Our crust edge is flat. I could see the raised edge solving the problems I ran into with it. And it would definitely make measuring easier. Man, you’re making me hungry GotRocks! One of the things I want to add when we get the fryer is poutine. I’m sure the name will...

Reading the customer the menu over the phone

We occasionally get customers who call up and ask the dreaded question, “Yeah, what kinda subs yall got?” We then have to spend time reading off all of our subs on the menu, along with a description of each one, and then wait for them to decide. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that people want to...

    pizza cheese

I also wonder what the attraction of diced cheese is. I saw people mention it so I picked up a bag to try it, but it seemed harder to spread on the pizza and seemed to roll off the pizza and get everywhere more than the shreds did. But some of you swear by it. What is it you like about it?

    pizza cheese

I tried it on our breadsticks because we always have so much cheese falling off the side that I felt some got wasted, as in it couldn’t really be eaten by the customer. I wasn’t happy with how it looked when it came out. It looked plastic and didn’t melt as appealingly to my eye. It’s different...

From workmates to competitors - Any small town advice?

I won’t pretend that I don’t eat things that would make Walter cringe (heck, I grew up in the area), but I’m constantly getting ideas for processed, pre-packaged foods from my suppliers. When I say I’m pushing to make more things in-house, it’s like I have two heads. I went to my biggest...

    Payroll software

We use intuit quickbooks for our 2 stores and have never had problem in the 3+ yrs or so we’ve been with them. We’ve probably maxed out around 10 employees though if that makes a difference. We started with them because my mom used them for her business before that. Not that we’ve never had any...

From workmates to competitors - Any small town advice?

Good point. They may be stopping then because that’s all they feel like working for the day. I would say, if they are comfortable with you, they might be interested in a partner. Raising a family adds a whole new dimension to it that you would have to decide for yourself. Good luck!

How to get Facebook "likes" for your fan page

Good point. We did the minimum, $5 on our Super Bowl post and got 6 likes and lots of likes on our post itself. All from local people. I was very happy with the exposure for the cost. I guess my focus should be less on how people see us without paying for it and instead just set up a budget for...

How to get Facebook "likes" for your fan page

On the day of the Super Bowl, we did our first Facebook paid ad. We got a pretty good response. We tailored it to certain areas that we normally serve. Remember, Facebook doesn’t know really if you’re selling local food or shipping T-shirts across the country. So it’s going to default to...

    Credit Card monopoly

For one, he’s probably not saying anything. It’s probably a cut and paste response put together that his office sends people. He most likely never saw your message. But basically, it’s saying “It’s not my fault. I tried to fight it. Vote for more of my party and we’ll fight for you.” I’m just...

From workmates to competitors - Any small town advice?

My first thought is - can your small town support 2 pastry shops? Are you doing this because there is a need that can be filled or do you just want to do it for yourself? For example, in our area, there are basically just our pizza shop and a BBQ place. We are friendly with each other, not only...

    pizza cheese

When we bought the place, the first thing we did was start weighing cheese. Customers noticed the improvement in quality and consistency immediately. Here is a recent thread where we discussed weighing cheese: http://thinktank.pmq.com/threads/scale-for-toppings.15961/

Should I upgrade my current Pos???

I hope I’m not hijacking the thread, but does anyone that doesn’t deliver have online ordering? I’m just curious if online orders tend to be more for delivery. We are carryout/dine in only and I was just wondering if online ordering would do me any good.

    150 businesses refuse to doorhang

Same here. I’m from a rural area, but lived in the city a decent chunk of my life. I never liked the door hangers on my apartment door and really hated a flyer on my windshield. Of course, I’m a little different in that I won’t even go to a place that makes a person stand out by the road with a...

    150 businesses refuse to doorhang

A surefire way to get me to not use your product is to hang something on my door or put something on my windshield under my wiper blade.

So is Super Bowl Sunday your busiest day of the year?

Hopefully for you, one day soon the Flames and Oilers will get it in gear and meet in the playoffs again!

So is Super Bowl Sunday your busiest day of the year?

Sounds like we were pretty average. We were moderately busy during the day, but died off around game time. I did my first ever Facebook ad, but pulled the trigger too late. Didn’t realize it would take several hours to be “approved”. Beer sales were pretty solid over the entire weekend and...
