We’re currently working with a client that will be handing out game cards during the last two weeks of December that can only be redeemed in Jan. & Feb. While not exactly the same promotion that you’re thinking of doing, it is similiar.

If you had flyers, mailers, email, etc. to advertise your “New Year’s Gift” to your customers in the weeks leading up to the holiday, your customers could make plans in advance.

I definitely like your idea of having to show a prior sales slip to participate. That’s a great cheap bounce-back and a way to build word-of-mouth advertising leading up to the New Year’s event.
