If I register a business name, say Rival Pizza,is only that name protected? What I mean is can a competitor come into town and use just the name Rival for his business?

Go read about Ray’s Pizza in NYC. That will more than answer your future headaches too come.

It may very well be one of those things that is determined by State or County rules. Where I am we had to register with the State (so they could steal my tax money…) and then also had to register our business name with our County. The later was to protect our name from being used elsewhere. Truth be told, I’m still unclear how far that protection might extend.

We registered a couple or three variations on our original name, Nick’s Pizza Stop, with the county. It was cheap enough, and better safe than sorry.
