What can be used instead of placemats?

I’m in need of creative alternatives to traditional placemats for my dining table, as I want to change up the look and feel. Can anyone suggest innovative options or unconventional materials that can serve the same purpose of protecting the table surface and adding aesthetic appeal?

I’m open to DIY ideas or budget-friendly solutions that are both functional and stylish. Any input from the forum community would be greatly appreciated!

thousands of years ago, bread was made as plates. When they finished eating off them they would eat the plates or give them to the dogs who would always wait under the talble. Bake some bread plates.
